Geothermal Heat/Cool

Geothermal Heat/Cool

Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs) are electrically powered systemsGeo1 that tap the stored energy of the greatest solar collector in existence: the earth. These systems use the earth’s relatively constant temperature to provide heating, cooling, and hot water for homes and commercial buildings reducing total energy costs by 50% or more. A GSHP system can be installed in a residential structure of any size, anywhere, whether it is single-family or multi-family. Click Here to get our GSHP guide. GSHPs can be installed on almost any size lot: under lawns, landscaped areas, driveways, or the house itself. An existing house can be retrofitted with a GSHP using existing ductwork. We also install driveway melting and pool heating GSHP systems. Hudson Valley Geo performs home evaluations for Geo-thermal heating and cooling systems. What is a home evaluation? We inspect your current system, evaluate the homes age and insulations. We then look at your current energy costs and provide an estimate of system costs, rebates, incentives, savings and calculate the return on your investment (ROI). Typically, a geo-thermal heating and cooling system will reduce your overall energy costs by over 50% and have an ROI of less than 9 years. Green Financing

Green Financing

At Hudson Valley Geo we can help you find ways to make your energy upgrades affordable. There are low-interest financing options where homeowners can pay for eligible home energy upgrades by taking advantage of two low-interest financing programs offered by NYSERDA. Both options offer loans of as much as $13,000 per household, or $25,000 if energy upgrades will pay for themselves in savings in 15 years or less. Option 1: On-Bill Recovery Loans An On-Bill Recovery Loan allows you to have your loan payments built into your utility bill. You’ll have no extra bills each month and nothing new to keep track of. Even better, your monthly payments will be calculated based on the expected amount your energy upgrades will save you on energy costs. You can repay your loan without a major increase in your monthly expenses. Option 2: Smart Energy Loan A Smart Energy Loan offers affordable interest rates, flexible terms and simple repayment options. Repaying a Smart Energy Loan is similar to any other conventional loan. You make monthly payments to NYSERDA’s loan servicer by check or automatic bank withdrawals. Learn more about interest rates and how to apply atEnergy Finance SolutionsOr call 1-800-361-5663. You can also contact Donna at Hudson Valley Geo for a no nonsense discussion of your financing options. Call (845) 235-4795 to speak with Donna or email: donna@hvgeo.com There is additional help for income-qualified homeowners. Depending on household income, homeowners can also qualify for a grant of up to $5,000 to cover up to 50 percent of the cost of energy efficiency upgrades, through the Assisted Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program. The maximum grant increases to $10,000 in two- to four-unit residential buildings with additional income-qualified households. Income guidelines are included in the application you’ll find on the NYSERD’s Get Started page. Finally, there are cashback incentives. The Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program offers a 10% cashback incentive on qualifying energy efficiency upgrades. Your contractor will help you secure this payment.

GSHPs are durable and highly reliable. The GSHP contains fewer mechanical components, and all components are either buried in the ground or located inside the home, which protects them from outside conditions. Hudson Valley Geo installed GSHP systems carry a 10-year mechanical warranty and a 50-year warranty on the installed ground loop.

All Hudson Valley Geo GSHP systems carry manufacturers warranties for major components that are equivalent to the warranties for conventional heating and cooling systems. Manufacturers of HDPE pipe used for ground loops warrant their products for 50 years.

The buried pipe, or ground loop, is the most recent technical advancement in heat pump technology. Recently, new heat pump designs and improved buried pipe materials have been combined to make ground loop GSHP systems the most efficient heating and cooling systems available.

GSHPs save money, both in operating costs and maintenance costs. Investments can be recouped in as little as three years. There is a positive cash flow, since the energy savings usually exceeds payment on the system.

The initial investment for a GSHP system is greater than that of a conventional system. However, when you consider the operating costs of a geothermal heating, cooling, and water heating system, energy savings quickly offset the initial difference in purchase price.

Currently installed systems are making a huge difference in our environment! The systems are eliminating more than three million tons of carbon dioxide and is equivalent of taking 650,000 automobiles off the road. GSHP systems conserve energy and, because they move heat that already exists rather than burning something to create heat, they reduce the amount of toxic emissions in the atmosphere. They use renewable energy from the sun, and because the system doesn't rely on outside air, it keeps the air inside of buildings cleaner and free from pollens, outdoor pollutants, mold spores, and other allergens.

The GSHP is one of the most efficient residential heating and cooling systems available today, with heating efficiencies 50 to 70% higher than other heating systems and cooling efficiencies 20 to 40% higher than available air conditioners. That directly translates into savings for you on your utility bills.

All systems require an emergency back up. Heat pumps can provide all the heat necessary even in the coldest weather. An economic analysis by your contractor should dictate what portion of the heat should be provided by the heat pump and what portion by auxiliary means.
